Managing waste wisely

Waste Reduction

There are many simple ways you can start to reduce the amount of waste you generate. Being waste wise can be broken into four main steps – Avoid, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Swapping single-use items with reusable items is a great way to create less waste.

Aim to avoid single-use items that are designed to be used once and then thrown away. Often single-use items are difficult or impossible to recycle. By avoiding using them in the first place you are well on your way to reducing waste to landfill. Items to place on the avoid list include plastic bags, disposable coffee cups, disposable cutlery and containers. Check out our friends at Plastic Free July for more inspiration.

Start looking at ways to reduce your overall consumption. This may include making shopping lists and only buying the items on your list.

Join the reuse revolution! By remembering your reusable shopping and produce bags, reusable water bottles, reusable coffee cups and cutlery you will be generating less waste. There are also great bargains to be made by buying second hand, providing that item with a new lease on life.

By correctly recycling items you are ensuring valuable resources do not go to waste. Remember it is important to Recycle Right, whether that is putting the correct items in the kerbside recycling bin or dropping off recyclables to collection points.
