The West Metro Recycling Centre has expanded its recycling services to include polystyrene.
This free service allows residents to responsibly dispose of their polystyrene so that it can be reused and recycled into new products, diverting it from landfill.
Commonly used in the packaging of bulky white-goods and electronic goods, polystyrene cannot be placed in your kerbside recycling bin. It creates large amounts of waste, which studies estimate take 500 to millions of years to degrade. Diverting polystyrene from landfill and recycling it into new products reduces the need to create more plastic and reduces environmental pollution.
Conditions:
- Polystyrene needs to be clean and white, without any adhesives, labels or paint. See images below.
- WMRC will not accept polystyrene beads (ie. beanbag fillers) or other foams. See images below.
- Drop-off is free, 7 days a week, and open to all members of the public. Visit here for location and opening hours.
- Domestic quantities only.
The WMRC is your first stop to safely dispose of items that don’t belong in your kerbside landfill or recycling bin. For a full list of acceptable items, click here or call the WMRC Recycling Hotline on 9384 6711.
