What We Do

What We Do

To help you manage your waste wisely, the WMRC provides comprehensive waste recycling, treatment and disposal services for acceptable items, seven days a week, for residents, businesses and councils. In its capacity as a transfer station, the West Metro Recycling Centre aggregates, compacts and loads large volumes of municipal solid waste into silos for effective and efficient transfer to distant sites for appropriate treatment or disposal.

The West Metro Recycling Centre accepts a range of recyclable and non recyclable items not suitable for kerbside collection.

We received around 25,000 tonnes of waste and recyclables from councils, commercial customers and residents in 2019-20. Residual waste from the district and across our west central catchment area is consolidated into silos at the West Metro Recycling Centre and efficiently transported in 24 tonne loads for disposal.

Waste Passes

Waste Passes

Managing waste wisely just got cheaper for Member and Participating Council residents at the West Metro Recycling Centre!

All Member and Participating Council residents qualify for special discounted rates for waste disposal, while some Member and Participating Council residents qualify for new Bulk and Green Waste Passes, replacing the old ‘tip pass’.

What is a Waste Pass?

A Waste Pass is a discount voucher for bulk or green waste disposal at the West Metro Recycling Centre. Each Waste Pass can only be used once. It allows you to drop off a small trailer load (about 1m³ which is equivalent to a 1.8m x 1.2m trailer filled to about 0.5m) of bulk or green waste at the West Metro Recycling Centre for free. If you qualify for a Waste Pass, you will find it attached to the same page as your Resident Access Pass, distributed with your rates notice. Please do not detach your waste passes from your Resident Access Pass.

Do I qualify for a Waste Pass?

Only if you live in the Town of Claremont, Town of Cottesloe,* Town of Mosman Park, Shire of Peppermint Grove or Town of Cambridge**.   See table below for the number and type of Waste Pass that you will receive with your rates notice for the 2021/22 Financial Year.

Council

Number & Type of Waste Pass issued for 2021/22

Town of Claremont 1 bulk; 1 green
Town of Mosman Park 1 bulk; 1 green
Shire of Peppermint Grove 2 bulk; 2 green
Town of Cottesloe *only applicable to seniors or residents living with a disability. Contact the Town directly for details.
Town of Cambridge **only available to certain residences without access to verge waste collection. Contact the Town directly

How do I use my Waste Pass?

Waste Passes can be used like a discount voucher. Just present your Resident Access Pass at the Recycling Centre, with your Waste Passes attached, and the Weighbridge Attendant will remove the Waste Pass relevant to your load.

Can I use a Waste Pass more than once?

No. Each Waste Pass is single-use, like a discount voucher. Just present your Resident Access Pass at the Recycling Centre, with your Waste Passes attached, and the Weighbridge Attendant will remove the Waste Pass relevant to your load.

What if I lose / use my Waste Passes before the end of the financial year – can I get more?

No. Waste Passes are only issued once a year, and the allocation you receive with your rates notice is your full allocation for the year. Similarly, Waste Passes cannot be replaced if you lose them. However, as a Member or Participating Council resident, you qualify for special discounted rates on your waste disposal all year round. See our special Member Council Fees and Charges page for details.

Can I exchange a Bulk Waste Pass for a Green Waste pass?

No, because Bulk Waste Passes and Green Waste Passes are priced differently.

Can I still use my old Tip Pass?

No, these expired on 1 January 2021.

Can I sell my Waste Pass if I don’t need it?

No. Waste Passes are not for resale.

I belong to a Member Council that doesn’t issue Waste Passes. What do I get?

Special discounted rates! As a Member Council of the Western Metropolitan Regional Council, you are entitled to new low Member Council rates for bulk and green waste disposal – see table belowJust bring your proof of residence / Resident Access Pass with your load to qualify. A full list of discounted fees and charges for disposal of other items can be found here.

Member Council Special Discounted Rate

Non-Member Council Rate

$20 green p/m³ + free entry $25 green p/m³ + entry fee
$40 bulk p/m³ + free entry $48 bulk p/m³ + entry fee

But I’m not a Member or Participating Council resident. Can I get a Waste Pass?

No, but you you can dispose of bulk waste, green waste, construction waste and other items at the West Metro Recycling Centre at competitive rates. Visit our fees and charges page for details.

What qualifies as Bulk Waste?

Bulk waste can be defined as solid waste items that don’t fit or aren’t suitable for your landfill bin. Bulk waste does not include liquids, household hazardous waste, asbestos, explosives, flammables, pharmaceuticals or chemical waste. Visit our specialist recycling page for details on how to dispose of these items safely.

What qualifies as Green Waste?

Green waste includes garden waste that can be processed into mulch. This includes tree prunings, leaf litter, tree stumps, flowers, palm fronds, twigs and lawn clippings. It does not include timber fencing, treated timber products, soil or sand, as these are considered bulk waste items and cost more than green waste to process.
