Calico & Ivy has been a big part of the Perth stitching community for 40 years this year. It was founded by Jo Brazier as Calico House in Napoleon St, Cottesloe. Ivy & Maud was opened as a sister store, which added yarn to the offerings. The two stores later combined and became Calico & Ivy.
We offer a beautiful space to come and learn new skills, connect with others and shop for beautiful materials for handmade projects. Classes are held right throughout the year for Knitting, Crochet, Mending, Smocking and all types of Stitching. Special workshops with visiting teachers are held regularly. We have a broad range of fabrics, yarns and threads, and we avoid synthetics wherever possible. Calico & Ivy are committed to reducing our environmental impact – we produce very little waste because we find a use for all our scraps, we use only compostable and/or recycled mailing and packaging products and wherever possible we select products that are not packaged in plastic. By teaching mending and making we are making a difference to the problem of textile landfill waste.
Being creative with textiles has many personal benefits no matter what your age or experience level. It improves hand-eye coordination and the dexterity of your hands. It has a calming effect on the nervous system – lowering heart rate and blood pressure, improving mood and reducing anxiety. It is super-satisfying to make your own creations to wear or to give as a very special gift.
Bring in your trail map for a 5% discount on full priced items. We will be selling special mending kits, scrap packs and craft kits on the day, as well as running the following drop-in sessions:
9am – Felt Christmas decorations for kids
10.30am – Simple hand stitching and introduction to darning – if you don’t know how to sew on a button, this is the session for you!
12pm – Christmas decoration making
You can also register for the Visible Mending for Beginners: Basket Darning workshop from 2-4pm.
