Learn how to get the most out of your groceries with the Western Metropolitan Regional Council’s new Cook More Waste Less workshops.
Hosted in collaboration with Foodbank WA, the workshops will teach participants to cook healthy and affordable meals, meal plan, and sort waste at home.
“With increased cost-of-living pressures, there’s never been a better time to reduce waste in the kitchen,” said WMRC CEO Stuart Devenish.
Data from national food waste campaign The Great Unwaste shows that many of us are wasting twice as much food as we think – potentially costing us $2,500 a year per household.
“Efficient, low-waste cooking and meal planning means you’ll save money by using every bit of those groceries,” said Stuart.
While some food waste is inedible (think bones and peels), about 70% of food that goes in the bin could be in our stomachs instead.
The workshops run from May to August at various locations throughout Cottesloe, Claremont and Peppermint Grove. With workshops catered to young people (18-25) as well as adults (25+), they’re perfect for students and those moving out of home. Tickets are $5 and include a delicious lunch or dinner prepared during the session. Some workshops will specifically cater to those with vegetarian or gluten-free dietary requirements.
