Cottesloe Nearly Good to FOGO

Cottesloe residents will soon be good to FOGO

The Town of Cottesloe is nearly good to go FOGO, with FOGO to be introduced in early June.  FOGO is a great way to reduce waste, help the environment and put food scraps to good use.

FOGO stands for Food Organics Garden Organics. It’s the collection of food scraps with organic materials from the garden which are used to create high quality compost. The green lidded GO bins currently used to collect garden organics will become Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins – as well as garden organics, food scraps will also be collected in this bin. Residents will know when they’re Good to FOGO as they will receive a caddy for collecting scraps in their kitchen with liners and instructions.  The Town is asking residents to leave GO bins out in the week beginning Monday 23 May so that we can supply your FOGO kit.

FOGO will be introduced initially to houses, duplexes and triplexes in the Town, with bigger strata properties coming on board later.  The Town is running an information session at the Lesser Hall at 10:30-11:30 on Saturday 14 May to answer queries you may have.  There will also be an online session which will be recorded.  Check out www.cottesloe.wa.gov.au/fogo for more information.

Town of Cottesloe Mayor Lorraine Young said, “The Town is very excited to be moving to the new FOGO system – it’s a fantastic way to reduce waste and look after the environment, all while turning food scraps into great compost for our gardens.

“We are also extremely pleased to be the first Local Government in the western suburbs to make this change and would like to thank the Western Metropolitan Regional Council for their assistance as we transition to the new system.”

Residents will continue to put out two bins each week: the FOGO bin and either the general waste bin or the recycling bin.  Libby Eustance from the WMRC said “People are very surprised about how little ends up in the red lid general waste bin when FOGO is rolled out.”

There will be no additional charges for FOGO bins and for nearly all residents, weekly collection days will stay the same.
