Getting a new phone for Christmas? Your old one can be a lifeline for vulnerable young people, thanks to a new partnership between the West Metro Recycling Centre and WA local youth charity, Hello Initiative (HI).
Mobile phone and internet access are proving to be key components enabling troubled youth to complete their court orders, reduce offending behaviours, and access essential services.
Latest statistics from Hello Initiative’s Mobile Support program reveal that two-thirds of young people engaged in their program reduced their offending behaviour (64%) since their referral. Young people are also using their smartphone to access other positive services, with 67% of young people also using their Hello Initiative referral to engage with education and training institutions.
“People are often surprised to learn that access to a smartphone is key to reducing the likelihood of a young person in the juvenile justice system re-offending,” says Ashleigh Small, Co-founder and CEO of Hello Initiative.
“Without a phone, simple things like contacting family, calling a doctor, checking a bus timetable, finding employment or contacting a youth justice officer is virtually impossible today.”
“That is why we are thrilled the WMRC is helping bridge the communication gap by collecting old smartphones for our Program to reach and support more vulnerable young people.”
“It is a pleasure to support an initiative that encourages responsible reuse and repair, while assisting disadvantaged youth to stay connected,” says Western Metropolitan Regional Council CEO, Stefan Frodsham.
“Statistics tell us that there are twenty-five million unused phones stored in Australian homes – twenty million of them still working.”
“Residents can safely donate their phone and make it reusable by unlocking it, restoring factory settings, and removing any iCloud or Google accounts.”
Residents can drop off their old unlocked and securely wiped mobile phones at the West Metro Recycling Centre across the festive period. Accepting Androids and Apple Ios5 and above. Visit the Hello Initiative for more program info.
