State award win: Over 20,000 people inspired to rethink textile waste

The Western Metropolitan Regional Council (WMRC) has taken home the Community Events and Engagement Award at the highly competitive, state-wide 2025 WasteSorted Awards for its (Re)Love Your Stuff campaign tackling textile waste.

Funded by a WasteSorted Community Education grant, the nine-month campaign engaged over 20,500 participants across Perth’s western suburbs – inspiring people to repair, reuse and rethink their clothing. It culminated in the Textile Trail, a self-guided tour of op-shops, consignment boutiques and repair hubs that bought sustainable fashion to life.

“This award is a testament to the passion of our team and volunteers,” said WMRC Chair Paul Kelly. “Real change starts with education and connection – and together, we’re showing that a low-waste future is possible.”

The WasteSorted Awards celebrate WA’s circular economy leaders. WMRC’s win highlights the strength of community collaboration in tackling the state’s waste challenges.
