How to dispose of recalled children’s sand

Some colourful children’s sand products have been recalled as they may contain asbestos.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a public warning advising customers to immediately stop using Kadink children’s play sand. The sand was sold at Officeworks, K-mart, Target, Educating Kids, Modern Teaching Aids and Zart Art and comes in small 10g tubes and 1-1.3kg tubs.

What to do if you have any of these products:

  • In the first instance, contact the store the item was purchased from to return and refund the item/s
  • The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation advises that the sand and any contaminated items (eg toys or cleaning items such as gloves) can be double-bagged and disposed of in household general waste bins.
  • Large quantities can also be disposed of at the West Metro Recycling Centre. Our regular asbestos disposal protocol (items double-wrapped in thick builder’s plastic and labelled) must be followed and fees apply.

WA’s Chief Health Officer has advised that laboratory results to date show no respirable fibres, meaning the risk to human health is very low. You can read the full ACCC statement here and updated advice from the WA Government here.
