How to dispose of recalled children’s sand

Some colourful children’s sand products have been recalled as they may contain asbestos.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a public warning advising customers to immediately stop using Kadink children’s play sand. The sand was sold at Officeworks, Kmart, Target, Educating Kids, Modern Teaching Aids and Zart Art and comes in small 10g tubes and 1-1.3kg tubs.

What to do if you have any of these products:

  • In the first instance, contact Officeworks (or the store the item was purchased from) to return and refund the item/s
  • Large quantities (>1kg) can be disposed of at the West Metro Recycling Centre. Our regular asbestos disposal protocol (items double-wrapped in thick builder’s plastic and labelled) must be followed.

Exposure to asbestos poses serious health risks, and even minimal contact should be avoided. You can read the full ACCC statement here.
