Think twice about asbestos

Think twice about asbestos

It’s National Asbestos Awareness Week (22-28 November 2021) and a timely reminder of the dangers posed by asbestos and how to avoid them.

1 in 3 houses in Australia contain asbestos, and if your home was built before 1990, then asbestos can be found anywhere, particularly in these locations.

If undisturbed, asbestos poses little health risk. However, if asbestos gets damaged, as can happen if you’re renovating an older house, you risk being exposed to asbestos fibres and developing life-threatening lung diseases and cancer later in life.

An easy way to avoid exposure is to “Get in the know, take it slow and get a pro’.

While the West Metro Recycling Centre accepts asbestos from households when prepared appropriately, we recommend that you engage a licensed asbestos professional to remove it, no matter how much or how little you have.

Even tradies need to call a licenced asbestos professional if they don’t have the equipment, skills, training or licence to handle asbestos.

Get a professional in to help locate, manage and remove asbestos safely by visiting the Australian Government Asbestos Safety & Eradication Agency or call 1300 326 148.
