Are you a resident or business that uses products in ‘big bags’? If so, we can accept them for recycling at the West Metro Recycling Centre.
What are big bags?
Big bags are large, woven plastic bags, often used for bulk products like fertiliser, seeds, animal feed, flour, salt, sugar, sand, gravel, mulch and cement. They can hold 15kg/L or more and usually come in one of two sizes – sacks and bulk bags.

How are big bags recycled?
The bags are collected through Big Bag Recovery (BBR), a voluntary, Australian Government-accredited product stewardship scheme. They are processed into resin pellets and made into products such as plastic chairs for schools. All processing and recycling occurs in Australia.
This news clip shows how it works:
Are there any big bags that are not accepted through the scheme?
Brands must opt in to be a part of the scheme. Find a list of participating brands on the Big Bag Recovery website.
We can still accept bags from brands not on this list, however they may not be recycled.
Who can drop off big bags? Is there a cost?
It’s free for anyone to bring their empty big bags to the West Metro Recycling Centre in Shenton Park.
